Chapter Eight
Angie
“Is there anything more I need to know about this whole Dawg thing before we get there?” asked Angie, as she flipped the tan sun visor down on the passenger side to look in the lighted mirror for about the tenth time since they’d set out from Manhattan. She moved some strands of hair around, first behind her ears and then covering them. She wasn’t sure which looked better.
“Are we in a contest to see who’s more nervous about this event?” The voice came from behind her as Hadley leaned forward and stuck his head between Angie and Jan in the front seats.
Jan groaned. “The Dawg thing is not a big deal. It’s ancient history.”
“Cliff, you’re not gonna convince her of that if you groan when you say it. Besides, you won’t be bothered with all the Dawg stuff, because everyone will be too busy staring at me and calling me by the wrong name. I think I’ll be the greater curiosity factor, since I haven’t been back since graduation.”
Angie knew Hadley was right. Among the three of them, he had the market cornered on dread and apprehension. Jan would waltz in to the Princeton Alumni leadership event as a member of the renowned Clifford family. Angie could coast on her prestige as a congresswoman. But Hadley, the Christmas tree farmer from Vermont—the transgender Christmas tree farmer from Vermont—was going to be the subject of everyone’s chatter or worse.
They were all quiet in the car for a few minutes. Angie felt the tension.
“Whose idea was it to go to this thing anyway?” asked Jan.
“Yours!” Angie and Hadley said at the same time.
“I know. My father and my brother couldn’t make it this year.”
“So Little Cliff got drafted.” Hadley rubbed the top of Jan’s head.
Jan batted his arm away. “Chambers, don’t call me that. I have to do my part from time to time you know.”
Angie took Jan’s hand and traced her knuckles with slow, soft movements.
“You guys, it’s better to go into this thing as a united front, don’t you think?”
Angie felt Jan squeeze her hand. “Hadley, what can we do to make this easier for you?”
“Keep the drinks coming?” he said.
Jan chuckled. “That I can definitely do.”
“But really, Hadley, what can Jan and I do or say to be supportive?”
“Nothing special. Just be normal.” He paused. “Well that’ll work for you, Angie. Cliff, though, I’m not so sure.” He grinned and squeezed Jan’s shoulder.
Jan lifted Angie’s hand to her lips and kissed it.
“Hadley’s right, babe. We can be there for him, but this is his life and he’s got to be in charge.”
“I know that, but I guess I’m just feeling protective.”
Hadley crossed his arms on the back of Angie’s seat and put his head down on them. “Angie, Cliff is right. I gotta slay these dragons myself. Otherwise it’s, what’s the word? Dis…”
“Disempowering?” asked Jan.
“Yup, that’s it. If I need a congresswoman to help me, soon I’ll build up a tolerance and then I’ll need a senator, and before you know it, the president.
